PM Surya Ghar subsidy: rates, eligibility and amounts
The short answer
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana gives residential households a central subsidy of ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW of rooftop solar, plus ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW — a maximum of ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or larger. The amount is credited directly to your bank account after your DISCOM inspects the installation.
Who is eligible
The subsidy applies to residential grid-connected rooftop systems: individual households (including independent floors) installing through a vendor registered on the national portal, with a net-metering agreement from their DISCOM. It does not apply to off-grid systems. Housing societies apply under a separate RWA track with different per-resident caps.
How the money reaches you
You pay the installer the full contract price. After installation, your DISCOM inspects and commissions the system, and MNRE transfers the subsidy directly to the bank account registered on the national portal — typically within 30 days of commissioning. The subsidy and the installer’s invoice are two separate money flows; never let anyone conflate them.
State top-ups
Some states — Uttar Pradesh, Kerala (Soura), and others at various times — add their own subsidy on top of the central amount. These change with state budgets, so check your state’s latest notification before assuming a top-up applies.

Is the subsidy available for 5 kW or 10 kW systems?
Yes, but it is capped: any system of 3 kW or larger receives the same maximum ₹78,000. Everything beyond 3 kW is your own investment, which should be justified by your consumption — not by the subsidy.
Can I get the subsidy if my roof is shared or I live in a flat?
Individual floors with a separate electricity connection and exclusive terrace rights qualify. Shared roofs must go through the society/RWA track, which has its own rules.
Does the subsidy expire?
The scheme targets 1 crore households and runs until the target or budget cycle changes. Rates have already been revised once — installing while the current rates are live protects your benefit.
